On March 8th 2019, the 150th anniversary of Berlioz’s death, more than 300 musicians (including tenor Michael Spyres, the Philharmonia Orchestra, two choirs, and four brass bands) assembled in St Paul’s Cathedral in London under the baton of John Nelson to perform his mighty Requiem: https://w.lnk.to/RequiemLY

As John Nelson has pointed out: “Berlioz, at the end of his life, said: ‘If I were threatened with the destruction of the whole of my works save one, I should crave mercy for the Grande Messe des Morts’… Berlioz was not a religious person, but one would never know it from his Requiem or his other religious works … They are all shot through with the fervour of his childhood’s Catholic upbringing.”

The musical and spiritual experience offered by the Grande Messe des Morts was heightened by the environment of St Paul’s Cathedral, a symbol of London and one of the grandest churches in the world. The physical scale of the venue and the performance can be appreciated to the full in the DVD, directed by Sébastien Glas and produced by Idéale Audience, while the accompanying CD version of this landmark concert makes its musical, emotional, and spiritual impact in purely sonic terms.
