Taiwan's Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival (in Pingxi District 平溪) is held at Shifen village, not Pingxi city. This happens twice a year. 1st festival is on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month. The 2nd is during the Mid-Autumn Festival. In between these 2 festivals, sky lanterns are released nightly. There's no entrance fee.
Getting there:
Take Taiwan Rail (TRA) from Taiwan Main Station to Ruifang Station. Journey is about 40 mins. Change to the Pingxi Line at Ruifang. Cost is NT$80 for unlimited rides. Journey from Ruifang to Shifen is about 45 mins. You may make a stop at Houtong Cat Village along the way if you like cats and have time to spare. Trains travel at hourly intervals.
