L’incoronazione di Dario, which concluded the Antonio Vivaldi Festival 2017 in Turin, is ostensibly an opera seria, but has truly comedic moments, in the manner of commedia dell’arte. The intricate plot tells of the rivalry between Dario, Oronte and Arpago as they vie for the throne of Cyrus, the late King of Persia. Following deceptions, betrayals and subterfuges, Dario succeeds in both ascending the throne and marrying Statira, Cyrus’ daughter and sister of the wicked Argene.

The cast featured in this production includes internationally-renowned singers who are widely considered specialists in the Baroque repertoire: tenor Carlo Allemano, endowed with a powerful and flexible vocal range; contralto Delphine Galou, a young, established performer; baritone Riccardo Novaro, a highly regarded performer of bel canto repertoire; and the young soprano Roberta Mameli, who has starred in several Vivaldi recordings as well as Dynamic’s world première recording of Leonardo Vinci’s Didone Abbandonata (CDS7788 / DVD 37788).

Conductor and harpsichordist Ottavio Dantone is considered one of today’s leading conductors of Baroque opera.

This masterpiece by Vivaldi presents music of remarkable beauty and considerable variety, shared between all the characters.
