By: Alma Latina de Long Beach"Los Negritos"During the African slave trade, it is told that a mother did not want be separated from her son, so she hid herself to come to Mexicao. Once in Mexico, the son was bit by a snake. The mother performed a ritualistic ceremony to rid her son of the snake's venom. This ceremony consists of dancing around the son and the mother wearing the snake on her head. Over time the music became based in violin and guitar, footwork was added and Christian religious icons were included."Los Chinelos"According to the House of Culture of Tlayacapan, in 1870 a group of young natives, tired of being excluded from the Carnival, organized a gang, dressed up with old clothes covering their faces with a handkerchief and started screaming, whistling and skipping through the streets of town, mocking the Spanish. Year after year, as it became more popular, the party became a ritual and gradually evolved to represent the Spanish with beards and masks.
