Augustin Hadelich and Orion Weiss take us on an American Road Trip with a captivating performance of Stephen Hartke's Netsuke – “Demons Carrying a Rich Man to Hell,” one of six movements inspired by intricate Japanese carvings, commissioned by the McKim Fund at the Library of Congress.

Watch as Hadelich and Weiss bring to life the vivid and eerie sonic landscape of mythical demons and haunting tales, featured on their album American Road Trip. Drawing from Japanese folklore, this movement vividly portrays a rich man hijacked by demons on his journey to the underworld.

American Road Trip travels through the diverse musical influences of Hadelich’s adoptive homeland, with compositions spanning the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries—from blues and bluegrass to European romanticism and modern American classical. Alongside Hartke, the album features works by Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Amy Beach, and Daniel Bernard Roumain, painting a rich and varied portrait of American music’s past and present.
