The soaring, optimistic opening of Brahms's String Quintet No 2 in G major, Op 111 is one of the great moments in chamber music: upper strings, enriched with the addition of a second viola, shimmer and quiver, while the cello utters a plunging, jumping melody in G major.
Although its music quality is no inferior to that of Op. 88, indeed, this Quintet has an even more intimate and abstract character, with rich and complex writing within the concise form that also characterises its twin work.
The Quintet in F major for two violins, two violas and cello Op. 88 was completed, in the spring of 1882, at Bad Ischl, a place which Brahms was particularly fond of. Contrary to usual, the composer immediately declared to be very pleased with his work, to the point that he wrote to the publisher Simrock, after the customary private performance: “I can assure you that up to today I have never listened to a better work written by me”. Structured in three extremely concise movements, the Quintet in F major is an extraordinary work, warmly communicative, undoubtedly one of the Hamburg musician’s best chamber compositions.
The two String Quintets Op. 88 and Op. 111 are particularly noteworthy and should be counted among the masterpieces of Brahms’s chamber output, even though they are rarely performed in concert because of the peculiarity of the required ensemble. There being no stable quintets, they are performed by a string quartet to which a second viola is added.
