Before there was Harlem, DC’s Shaw and U Street neighborhoods were known as “Black Broadway.” In addition to boasting the nation’s largest African-American population until the 1920s, it also produced some of jazz’s most influential artists over the decades, such as Duke Ellington, Shirley Horn, and Billy Taylor. These days, high-rise lofts may have sprung up over speakeasys, but the area’s jazz culture remains strong.

We sat down with saxophonist Paul Carr, founder of The Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival and The Jazz Academy of Music, at Twins Jazz on U Street to get a taste for the local scene. For nearly three decades, Paul has been entrenched in DC music, making his rounds at every venue in the area and teaching the best and brightest how to play. After several albums and hundreds of performances, he took some time to reflect on how jazz in the District has evolved.
