With this album of works by Schoenberg, Zemlinsky and Webern – key figures in Vienna’s musical life in the early 20th century – the Quatuor Arod honours Mathilde Schoenberg, born Mathilde Zemlinsky in 1877: https://wce.lnk.to/tmaLY

Mathilde's elder brother was Alexander von Zemlinsky, who went on become close friends with Arnold Schoenberg and to give him lessons in counterpoint. Mathilde and Arnold married in 1901 and the three works on this disc were written in the years that followed: Schoenberg’s seminal String Quartet No 2 dates from 1907-8, Zemlinsky’s richly textured second quartet from 1913-15, and Webern’s lyrical, Brahmsian Langsamer Satz (Slow movement) from 1905 – the year after Webern became Schoenberg’s pupil.

This is the Quatuor Arod’s second album for Erato. Joining them in two movements of Schoenberg is soprano Elsa Dreisig, whose debut album Miroirs was released on Erato in 2018.
