Juhl Media presents Reza Vali, composer, in conversation with filmmaker Ching Juhl. The live program includes interviewing Reza Vali, and discussing his musical compositions. Wednesday, February 17, at 4 PM (ET).

REZA VALI began his music studies at the Conservatory of Music in Tehran, and in 1972, went to Austria and studied music education and composition at the Academy of Music in Vienna. After graduating from the Academy of Music, he moved to the United States and continued his studies at the University of Pittsburgh, receiving his Ph.D. in music theory and composition in 1985. Mr. Vali has been a faculty member of the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University since 1988.

He has received numerous honors and commissions, including the honor prize of the Austrian Ministry of Arts and Sciences, two Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships, commissions and performances from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, Kronos Quartet, Carpe Diem String Quartet, Seattle Chamber Players, and Arizona Friends of Chamber Music, as well as grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, The Pittsburgh Foundation, and the Pittsburgh Board of Public Education. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust as the Outstanding Emerging Artist for which he received the Creative Achievement Award.

Vali's orchestral compositions have also been performed in the United States by the Seattle, Baltimore and Memphis Symphonies and Orchestra 2001. His chamber works have also been performed by Cuarteto Latinoamericano and Da Capo Chamber Players. His music has been performed in Europe, China, Chile, Mexico, Hong Kong, and Australia and recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, Naxos, New Albion, MMC, Ambassador, Albany, and ABC Classics.

CHING JUHL is a passionate filmmaker, video journalist and music educator. Juhl has directed, filmed, edited and produced over 30 documentary films, as well as creating promo videos and live concert productions. She has published more than 600 videos on social media with topics ranging from current issues to education, and from political events to music productions. She has hosted near 90 live talk shows on the Juhl Media’s YouTube channel since the pandemic starts. 

My Yang Gang Diary (2021), a feature documentary by Ching Juhl won the Best Documentary Feature Awards at Rome International Film Festival. Her short film Black Lives Matter was world premiered at the Socially Relevant Film Festival NY in 2020. 

As concert violist, Ching Juhl has performed with Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony, Pittsburg Opera Orchestra and Grand Teton Music Festival. Juhl taught music appreciation, orchestral studies and violin/viola at St. Joseph’s College, Long Island University and NYS public schools. She has been directing Music Studio Manhattan since 2001. 

Ching Juhl earned BA from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, MM from Indiana University, and Video Production Certificate from NYU. She lives in Manhattan with her husband and child.
