Die deutchen Beatmädchen: German Girl Pop WALTHER (also known as Simone, Gitta MacKay, Jackie Robinson) was born in Annaberg, East Germany but became a defector as she escaped to Western Germany at the age of 16, quickly establishing herself as a singer, signing with Philips in 1962 when she released two singles. In 1967, she changed her stage name to SIMONE and went on to record for Telefunken Records. "Gelegenheit macht Diebe" was on the B-side of her first single from the new label. In the late 60s, she joined THE CORNELY SINGERS, who eventually evolved into THE LOVE GENERATION. At the same time, she quickly became a much-sought session singer in Munich. She also provided the trademark scream on Penny McLeans 1975 German chart topper Lady Bump, and even had her own disco hit in the US under the name JACKIE ROBINSON. In the late 70's and 80's, she was part of the successful German girl group THE HORNETTES. After more than 40 years in the business, Gitta is still an active artist, she released two solo albums in the late 90's and joined German rock/blues group THE BLACKFINGERS in 2004.
