Miley kicked off the day’s BRIGHT MINDED: Live With Miley by thanking all of her viewers who have been a part of this journey the past three weeks. She announced that she will be taking some time off from the show, and is looking forward to using all of the tools and practices that her guests and fans have shared during this time.
The first guest today was Sir Elton John, who joined the show from his home in Los Angeles. Elton hopes this experience will lead people to be more tolerant and kind towards one another after this passes. He’s working with his foundation, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, to donate $1 million over the next three months to help marginalized communities and those affected by other diseases & pandemics during this time; his goal is to ensure they are still able to get the medical assistance and resources that they need on a regular basis. To stay bright minded, Elton told viewers that calling his family and friends throughout the day has been a practice that helps him show his appreciation and love for them while being far away from them physically.
Actress, producer, and activist Kerry Washington joined Miley next. They discussed their tools to remaining calm and keeping your heart open. Each person has their own process and this process is everchanging as we adjust to a new normal, but something that helps them both is staying connected to those you love and seeking advice from reliable sources. They also talked about Kerry’s latest project – Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere – which was made by an amazing group of female powerhouses both in front of and behind the camera. Kerry emphasized how important it is to have women involved when telling women’s stories, like her character’s relationship with her daughter in the show. She also mentioned how crucial it is that everyone participate in the 2020 Census – this only takes 10 minutes, but will have a lasting impact on our communities for the next 10 years, as this information helps advise the government on how to allocate funding across the country.
The show then welcomed singer and actress Selena Gomez, who strongly encouraged viewers to reconnect with people via phone that they haven’t talked to in a while and remind them that they are loved and appreciated. She and Miley both spoke very openly about their experiences with mental health, and they shared a variety of amazing organizations and ways to seek help if you are struggling. Selena is also working with a few specific organizations during this time, such as MusiCares. Her advice for staying bright minded is to watch things that encourage you, and speak regularly with people you trust.
Lastly, Miley was joined by late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon. They reminisced about Miley’s previous appearances on The Tonight Show and compared talk show set ups. They then closed the show by jamming out to Diplo’s remix of the “Bright Minded” theme song.
