10 FACTS ABOUT DIZZY GILLESPIE'S 1964 PRESIDENTIAL RUN
Did you know? In 1964, jazzman Dizzy Gillespie set out to become the first black President of the US. Although many of his promises (like making Miles Davis head of the CIA) were humourous, the campaign was no joke; the jazz innovator believed in civil rights, and said that, if elected, he would not only put an end to the war in Vietnam - but also make education and healthcare free for everyone.
Song: King Porter Stomp
Performed by Teddy Hill and his orchestra
Solos: Dizzy Gillespie (tpt), Shad Collins (tpt), Russell Procope (as), Dicky Wells (t.bone)
Rec. May 17, 1937
