The so-called Neapolitan School of opera – whose foundation is often credited to the Sicilian-born Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) – became highly influential in the course of the 18th century. In the 17th century, composers such as Francesco Provenzale (1632-1704), considered the ‘father’ of Neapolitan opera, took a lead from the work of the great master of Venetian opera, Francesco Cavalli (1602-1676).
