The multi-Grammy winner and former Late Show bandleader, who grew up in the greater New Orleans area, is steeped in the blues. “The vision of blues for me is the musical allegory of the human condition,” he tells host Lara Downes. Together they tease out the strands of interwoven lineage, all the way back to Beethoven’s music. “When I was playing those melodies as a kid,” Batiste recalls, “they always felt like they were the most rhythmically, thematically, and emotionally structured to accommodate transformation.”
