270 years after its staged premiere, Rameau's Achante et Céphise receives its world premiere recording! The adventurous opera is conducted by Alexis Kossenko with Les Ambassadeurs, the choral singers of Les Chantres du CMBV, and vocal stars Sabine Devieilhe and Cyrille Dubois in the title roles. Achante et Céphise (also sometimes spelled Acante et Céphise) is a magical ‘pastorale héroïque’ in three acts. The young lovers of its title are caught in the battle between good and evil, embodied by the enchantress Zirphile (the soprano Judith van Wanroij) and the magician Oroès (the baritone David Witczak). The subtitle of the opera, La Sympathie, refers to a talismanic gift that Zirphile makes to Achante and Céphise: even when separated, they can share each other’s experiences and emotions.
