The GOLDEN GATE QUARTET” was the most influential Gospel Group of his time.
Their music was deeply rooted in Church tradition (listen to the first track here and guess where “rap” comes from) but also they adopted some of the subtle changes that jazz brought to Church Music, that in turn one of its main sources.
You could also tell that the Mills Brothers gave the Quartet some idea about imitating the sound of horns with voice.
Golden Gate, known since 1931, when they started, to the days of these recording, their first ones, as GOLDEN GATE JUBILEE QUARTET, developped a highly original, and sensational, way of Gospel singing with enormous swing and breathtaking precision that made you think to the best swing big bands!
