The Amphitheatre Ephesus in Turkey was the site of one of Elton’s most striking solo concerts. On July 17th 2001, he played a 20-song set with every decade of his career represented, including this performance of ‘Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters’. In the track, lyricist Bernie Taupin expresses his then-disillusionment with New York City. The song quickly became a favourite by both fans and the composer, who has called it “one of my all-time favourites”.
